The nearest book, in the middle of the floor, was Celtic Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs. It was a near miss, because page 56 of this particular book has only 4½ sentences! The fifth sentence was the very end of the story!

What's really cool is that I landed on Hudden and Dudden and Donald O'Neary, a story which I used to tell eight or nine years ago. Perhaps it's time to bring it out again...
